Adele may be just one Tony away from an EGOT, but that doesn’t mean you’ll see her starring in a musical anytime soon. In her new cover story for The Hollywood Reporter, the British chanteuse discussed her career as well as her acting aspirations on stage and on screen.
Unlike her contemporaries Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, Adele isn’t necessarily interested in becoming an actress. “No,” she said point-blank when THR asked if she had ever considered acting. But while she may not be dying to get in front of the camera, there is one role Adele says that she’d love to play—though she didn’t say much more than that. “There is one movie I want to do, but the guy whose movie it would be, he’s not mentally ready to write the script for it,” she told the outlet.
The singer kept further details about the role close to her chest. “I’m not giving you no clues,” she said—though she did reveal that she’s actively pursuing the project and thinks that she’d be wonderful in the secret role. “I bug him every now and then about it, but he’s just not there yet. But that’s the only role I ever want. Because I think I’d nail it. I think I’d do really, really, really good at it.”
As for what the project might be, you can rule out a biopic. Adele made it clear that she has no interest in playing another performer, although those sort of roles are what she’s mostly been offered.
“I get offered to do biopics of singers, and I think that’s too obvious,” she said in the interview. “And also anyone that’s great enough to have a biopic about them, you’re just setting yourself up for disaster. Then would they want me to sing as myself? Because then it would sound like me, it wouldn’t sound like them. So I wouldn’t do it. But that’s all I’ve been offered, really.”
Another thing she’s not interested in doing: musical theater. “I don’t love musicals. That’s the only issue,” said Adele. While she hasn’t received any official offers to appear on Broadway, and she isn’t a huge fan of the art form—“I’m much more of a Leonard Cohen kind of person,” she quipped—there’s still one major role in the musical theater canon she thinks she could take on: Mama Rose. “I do remember going to see, what was it called? Let me google it. Hang on. Gypsy, as the mum,” she told THR. “Because it’s just one big song. I think I could handle it. I could do that eight, 10 times a week. One big song.” So when Adele becomes the next woman to win a Tony for playing Sondheim’s famously overeager stage mom, don’t be surprised.
