Longtime couple Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are married. The two filmmakers met in 2010 on the set of Greenberg, which Baumbach wrote and directed, with Gerwig in a lead role, and began dating in 2011, and made their union legal at City Hall in New York City, a representative confirmed to People.

They are parents to two sons, and frequently collaborate on film projects. They co-wrote this summer’s smash hit movie Barbie together, and Gerwig directed the film. The movie is nominated for Best Picture, Comedy or Musical in the upcoming Golden Globes, with Gerwig getting a nod in the director category, and a joint nomination in the screenplay honors, among the film’s nine total nominations.

Gerwig, the cover star of Vanity Fair’s December/January issue, welcomed both her sons, 4-year-old Harold and baby Isadore, quietly, so it’s not unexpected that the news of her and Baumbach’s legal status change (they have long referred to each other a husband and wife, and were both wearing bands on their left ring fingers at a Brooklyn Barbie screening in November) happened without public fanfare as well.

She reflected on her home life, surrounded by males (she is also stepmother to 13-year-old Rohmer, whom Baumbach shares with ex-wife Jennifer Jason Leigh), to VF.

“Just the decibel level is just…how are three boys one hundred boys?” she said. “If I had to pick, I probably imagined myself with girls. But I’m so delighted by these wonderful boys. It’s sort of like the questions I get about being a lady director: I can only ever be the director I am, which happens to be a lady director. Before Harold, I read all those books about ambivalent motherhood. I was scared because I really liked Rohmer as much as I loved him. But luckily, I’ve had a very beautiful experience.”
