With a single Instagram Story, Jack Antonoff has sent Taylor Swift fans into a tizzy about the timeline surrounding her split from ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

Considering Swift and Antonoff are long-time collaborators—he has production credits on her last six studio albums beginning with 1989—and friends, it's not surprising to see Swift pop up in a throwback photo on Antonoff’s Instagram story in honor of the release of her song “You’re Losing Me (From the Vault).” The track hit streaming services Wednesday in celebration of Swift being the top streamed artist globally on Spotify this year (previously, the song had only been available via her online store and as a limited CD at her Eras Tour show in East Rutherford, New Jersey).

No, the surprising part of the snapshot Antonoff shared, a candid of Swift focused very intently on sorting raisins on a woodblock countertop, is his caption: “you’re losing me is out today,” he wrote. “a very special track from the midnights sessions that’s finally st[r]eaming! written and recorded at home on 12/5/21 right after taylor ate these raisins.”

Now is when your double major in Swiftology and Forensic Investigation comes in handy: Why include such a specific date, let alone a random Sunday in December, if it’s not important? Here’s where the lyrics of this “very special track,” and the theories fans have drawn from them, are important.

In “You’re Losing Me,” Swift drops such devastating lines as “I wouldn’t marry me either / A pathological people pleaser / Who only wanted you to see her” and “How long could we be a sad song / ‘Til we were too far gone to bring back to life?” She wonders, “Do I throw out everything we built or keep it? / I’m getting tired even for a phoenix / Always rising from the ashes.” The lyrics seem to reference a long-term relationship on the decline, the narrator contemplating the sunk cost over time and the future of the romance, whether it’s something to (keep on trying to) salvage.

Now to crunch the numbers. News of Swift’s split from Joe Alwyn broke in April of this year. She was in the early months of her Eras Tour at the time, and shortly before those headlines, had replaced the song “Invisible String”—which tells a story of soulmates staying connected—with the breakup song “The 1.” Eagle-eyed viewers, however, may notice that April 2023 is significantly later than December 2021. If “You’re Losing Me” is in fact about Alwyn, as fans have speculated, then it being written in 2021 points to trouble between Alwyn and Swift much earlier than previously thought. Swift is known for keeping quiet about her romantic life, and Alwyn is known for not commenting at all, so prior to the breakup news (which was attributed to “sources”), the best proof of the two’s relationship came in the form of Alwyn uploading a photo of one of Swift’s cats and his sock feet to his Instagram account in early 2023. 

Clearly, Antonoff's date-drop has caused some confusion. And if that wasn’t enough for an Easter egg-obsessed fandom, one Twitter user spotted the bottle of wine lingering near Swift's raisin snack. Its name? “Gaslighter.” A beverage or a hidden message? You be the judge.

Meanwhile, Swift appears to have moved on with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in recent months, and he’s more than happy to comment—with caution.

“That was the biggest thing to me: make sure I don’t say anything that would push Taylor away,” he said in a recent profile. He said that he wants to keep his private life private, but isn’t shy about shouting Swift out, like he did on this week’s episode of New Heights, the podcast he co-hosts with brother Jason Kelce, when he thanked Swift for liking an Instagram post from the Chiefs bragging on a record Travis had broken.

“Thanks Tay,” he said with a laugh. “I appreciate you on the Chiefs page supporting the Yeti.”

His family also appear to be on board with the relationship, with Swift sitting with Travis’ parents at games and both Donna Kelce and Ed Kelce singing her praises. Oh, and also literally singing Swift’s songs: Donna posted a video to her Instagram account, showing off her cabin on a cruise ship while Swift’s “The 1” played softly in the background. Sing it, Mama Kelce. Sing it.
